Sierra Leone's government and Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels agreed on Thursday to take "immediate action to facilitate fast disarmament" in all the country's districts by 30 November, a statement from the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) said. The two sides agreed to collect from 15 November to 31 December those weapons not covered by the disarmament programme. They also agreed to carry out "a wide publicity and sensitisation effort" to ensure the programme's success. Thursday's meeting, held at UNAMSIL headquarters in Freetown, was the latest of the Joint Committee on Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration, which comprises representatives of the government, UNAMSIL and the RUF's political and peace council. The committee's next meeting will be on 13 December.
