The US ambassador to Ethiopia, Tibor P. Nagy, has delivered de-mining equipment donated by the US to officials of the Ethiopian Mine Action Office, the pro-government Walta Information Centre reported on Wednesday. Nagy was accompanied by the director of the US State Department's Office for East African Affairs, Lauren Moriarty. The American officials watched a demonstration of de-mining techniques staged by trainees at Holeta de-mining camp.
According to Walta, the US government has given equipment and training for nearly 200 de-miners, over the past year. It was expected that 500 de-miners would be deployed within the two years, to clear areas along the border with Eritrea. At the ceremony, the ambassador noted that during a trip to the northern Tigray towns of Zela Ambesa, Irob, and Alitena last month, people there told him there were many areas where their children could not go and their cattle had been killed by mines, Walta reported. The equipment will be used by Ethiopian military trained as de-miners.
