The National Recovery Committee (NRC) is due to hold a donors meeting in the capital Freetown on Friday to assess progress and mobilise funds for the recovery of Kono District, eastern Sierra Leone, the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) reported.
Delegates at the meeting are expected to discuss the report commissioned by the NRC to assess the immediate recovery needs of Kono after 10 years of civil war. The report was prepared following a needs assessment mission in late September to Kono by the Government of Sierra Leone, NGOs, UN agencies and UNAMSIL. The Sierra Leone police deployed to Kono in mid-October as part of ongoing efforts by the government to extend its authority in areas previously under the control of the Revolutionary United Front. Disarmament has recently been completed in the diamond-rich district.
The National Recovery Committee was established to lead the post-conflict recovery effort and help restore government authority throughout Sierra Leone, UNAMSIL reported. It provides a forum for discussion among its members who include all key government ministries, UN agencies, multilateral development institutions such as the World Bank and the EU and various NGOs.
