Kidnapped doctor released

Country Map - Somalia IRIN

A doctor kidnapped in Mogadishu nine days ago was released unharmed on Tuesday, a local source told IRIN. Doctor Sa'id Ahmad Kutub was kidnapped by gunmen in south Mogadishu on 16 September, while on his way to work. Staff at the SOS Kinderdorf hospital in south Mogadishu, where Kutub worked, went on strike in protest against the doctor's abduction, but were back at work on Tuesday, Awil Hashi an area resident said. SOS Kinderdorf is a maternity and pediatric hospital, and one of the best in Mogadishu. Awil said the hospital did not pay any ransom for Kutub's release. It is not clear whether the doctor's family paid any ransom or not, he added. The doctor had returned to work in the hospital immediately after his release, Awil said.
