OAU hails peace progress, urges international support

The Central Organ of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution meeting held on Thursday expressed widespread appreciation for efforts made by parties to move the peace process forward. It called on the international community to support the inter-Congolese dialogue, due to begin on 15 October in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and fund humanitarian activities "commensurate with the plight of the Congolese civilian populations affected by the conflict in the DRC". It also appealed to the UN Security Council for the immediate implementation of Phase III of the UN mission in the DRC, "which constitutes an essential element for the implementation of the Disarmament, Disengagement, Reintegration, Repatriation or Relocation of the armed groups; the establishment of the institutions that would emanate from the inter-Congolese dialogue; and the final withdrawal of all foreign troops from the DRC".
