Sierra Leone police are investigating reports of shooting on Thursday in three neighbourhoods in Freetown's Western Area, Inspector Khrushchev Kargbo of the police media office told IRIN.
"We have no suspects," he said on Friday.
PANA quoted Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Francis Munu as saying: "We are very concerned about the shooting, especially after the disarmament and demobilisation of combatants has stalled."
Kargbo said a joint police, army and UN Mission in Sierra Leone team had been deployed to the neighbourhoods of Mallamah, Goderich and the Pademba Road Prison area, as a precaution. The prison is the country's maximum security detention facility and holds several Revolutionary United Front members and other hardcore criminals. He said there had been no arrests nor had any casualties been reported.
The Western Area has long been declared an arms-free zone.
