UNHCR assessing refugee returnee needs in Kambia

    ABIDJAN

    UNHCR says it has been conducting assessment missions in Kambia District in preparation for the large number of returning refugees expected from the Lokomasama host community and from Guinea.

    In its weekly update for 3-9 September, it said this movement was expected now that Sierra Leonean Vice President Joe Demby had declared several chiefdoms of the district safe. OCHA also reported that USAID had, through the UNHCR, offered 320 packages of zinc sheets for shelter. UNHCR will provide plastic sheeting to villages with large numbers of returning refugees.

    Kambia, some 80 km north of Freetown, was a Revolutionary United Front launch pad for attacks on Guinea that attracted strong retaliation.

    With hostilities over in the area, the UNHCR has held a coordination meeting to discuss ways of reviving education in the district, UN OCHA reported in its update for 9-31 August. One of the measures, it reported, would be to introduce a food programme for primary school children so that they could concentrate better in class.
