ZANU-PF warns of violence

Zimbabwe’s ruling party has warned that it will respond with violence to any attempt forcibly to remove President Robert Mugabe from office. Nathan Shamuyarira, the chief spokesman for the ZANU-PF party, told state television his party and government had the capacity to reply to violence with violence. Shamuyarira was speaking a day after Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change, warned of potential violence if Mugabe did not step down before the next elections scheduled for 2002.
