West African nations agree to fight child trafficking

Mali and Cote d’Ivoire on Friday signed a bilateral cooperation agreement to fight cross-border child trafficking, the first of its kind signed in Africa, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) regional office in Abidjan reported. The agreement, signed in the central Ivoirian town of Bouake follows the adoption in February by West and Central African nations of a common platform for action on child trafficking and exploitation at a conference in Libreville co-sponsored by UNICEF and the ILO. UNICEF said the agreement expressed the will of the two governments to abolish child trafficking. They drew up national action plans covering all aspects of prevention and control, along with the repatriation and rehabilitation of exploited children and set up a permanent monitoring committee that is to hold its first meeting in December.
