UN panel to probe illegal exploitation of resources

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed an international panel to investigate the illegal exploitation of natural resources in the DRC. According to a UN report, a former Cote d’Ivoire energy minister and World Bank official, Ms Safiatou ba-N’Daw, was named as chairwoman of the panel which also includes Francois Ekoko of Cameroon, Moustapha Tall of Senegal, Henri Maire of Switzerland and Mel Holt of the US. The panel will be based in Nairobi and its brief is to submit a preliminary report to the Security Council within three months, before issuing a final report with recommendations. The panel was set up in response to a request from the Council.
