Court orders vote recount

    NAIROBI

    Zimbabwe’s High Court this week ordered a recount of votes in the Marondera East constituency, citing serious irregularities in the electoral process. The decision followed an application by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

    According to the daily ‘The Independent’, Mines and Energy Minister Sydney Sekeremayi, polled 10,692 votes against the MDC’s Didymus Munenzva’s 10,629 in June’s parliamentary elections that were marred by violence and intimidation.

    MDC Secretary-general Welshman Ncube told the newspaper that some of the irregularities in the elections were so serious that they were not only considering the nullification of the results but the disqualification of some of the ruling ZANU-PF candidates whom they believed violated the electoral laws.

    Among some of the irregularities cited by the court application were the threats issued against MDC supporters by Sekeramayi to the effect that unspecified action was going to be taken against them.
