Khartoum official visits Eritrea

    NAIROBI

    Sudanese Defence Minister Bekri Hassan Salih visited the Eritrean capital, Asmara, on Friday for talks on the situation along the border between the two countries, news reports said. A brief dispatch by the SUNA news agency which announced the visit, recalled that Ibrahim Mahmud Hamid, governor of Sudan’s eastern Kassala state, had earlier this week of accused Eritrea of backing a planned rebel offensive against his region.

    The independent ‘As-Sahafi ad-Dawli’ quoted sources as saying that Eritrea had been assisting rebels of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) to plan and conduct military operations. The sources told the daily that Eritrea had become hostile towards Sudan because it believed the Sudanese government had offered Ethiopian troops access to western Eritrea through Sudanese territory after the resumption of the two-year border war with its southern neighbour which ended last month.
