Donor pledges slow to arrive

Mozambique has received only about 25 percent of the US $453 million pledged by donors for post-flood reconstruction. Prime Minister Pascoal Mocumbi said he expects at least 80 percent of all the promised money to arrive this year, Harare-based Sabanews reported. Mocumbi said disbursement of the funds is a matter of great urgency for essential repairs to start before the onset of the next rainy season. According to Sabanews, he said procedures followed by donors are not suitable for an emergency situation. He added that the delays have caused some projects to be suspended, and the state has so far not received money to rebuild health centres and schools damaged by flooding. However, Mocumbi noted that road repairs were underway.
