Taylor challenges US on illegal diamonds issue

    NAIROBI

    Liberian President Charles Taylor challenged the United States on Wednesday to produce evidence that Liberia is involved in illegal trading in diamonds and arms with Sierra Leone’s rebels, PANA reported.

    “Powerful countries have said that they have evidence but they will not show it to us. Well, this is wrong,” he said in a nationwide broadcast, according to PANA.

    US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Pickering, who met Taylor on Monday during a visit to Monrovia had said the US was “satisfied with the evidence” it had seen on Liberia’s involvement in Sierra Leone.
