Call for probe into US role

The United States Committee for Refugees, a non-profit humanitarian organisation, has called on the US government to carry out an investigation into its failure to respond appropriately during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The appeal followed an OAU report prepared by an International Panel of Imminent Personalities released last Friday. “The US government stands virtually alone in refusing to conduct a transparent examination of its policy failures during the Rwandan genocide,” the US Committee for Refugees said. It noted that Belgium, France and the UN had all conducted investigations into their own actions during the 1994 genocide. The OAU report concludes that the US government “knew full well” about the genocide, but refused to respond because of the Clinton administration’s “geographical indifference”.
