Finance Minister in talks with IMF

    NAIROBI

    Zimbabwe's Finance Minister, Herbert Murerwa, on Friday held talks with the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Horst Koehler in Mozambique, on a possible resumption of financial aid to his country, media reports said on Monday.

    Government officials were quoted as saying Murerwa had decided to intercept the IMF chief in Mozambique to appeal for a resumption of aid to help Zimbabwe pull out of its economic difficulties. The IMF has indicated it would consider Zimbabwe's requests for financial assistance once President Robert Mugabe named a new cabinet and had a fresh economic recovery programme.

    Koehler's four-nation African tour has taken him to Nigeria, Senegal, Mozambique and South Africa for talks with government leaders on what role the IMF could play in their economies.
