A WFP spokesperson told IRIN that there were contingency plans for another 50,000 Eritrean refugees said to be on the move from western Eritrea today. WFP is planning to airlift corn soy blend, supplied by the Italian government, to Kassala, eastern Sudan, this weekend to feed 50,000 Eritrean refugees already registered in the region. There was mass displacement in western Eritrea after Ethiopian troops captured the regional capital Barentu, and then moved out of the town this week into
other small villages near the Sudan border. UNHCR sources told IRIN that many of the displaced crossing the border over the last few days were in significantly poorer condition than an earlier exodus, indicating that some of the displaced had been hiding in the hills and small villages without assistance for some time.
