Zimbabwe farmers look for opportunities in neighbouring Zambia

White Zimbabwean farmers are eyeing farmland in neighbouring Zambia, the country’s leading farm group was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

“The ZNFU has received enquiries from Zimbabwean white farmers who have visited with a view to buying ready developed farms,” Ajay Vashe, President of the Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) was quoted by Reuters as saying. “We would like to see genuine farmers come to Zambia, preferably those who would like to invest in tobacco, horticultural and floricultural produce,” he added.

According to Zambian government records, about three dozen Zimbabwean farmers have purchased farmland in the Tanzara and Mpongwe districts in northern Zambia in the past 12 months. ZNFU officials said Zimbabwean farmers are also being shown farmland in the Chisamba, Kabwe, and Mumbwa regions of central Zambia, as well as the Kasama district where tea and coffee farming was recently introduced.
