A week of heavy rainfall has destroyed a major roads used to deliver aid in Mozambique, a relief official said.
Silvano Langa, Director of the National Disaster Management Institute in Mozambique said that the rains had interrupted traffic on a road that links southern and central Mozambique. He said that the road was being used to deliver aid after the main road was destroyed by severe flooding in February and March this year, which killed an estimated 700 people and left an estimated two million homeless.
Langa has asked foreign donors to allow Mozambique to use eight helicopters beyond Friday, when under the original agreement, the helicopters would no longer be used to distribute aid. He said that so far China had agreed to make two helicopters available.
