Food aid needed for Angolan refugees

WFP on Tuesday said new donor funding was urgently needed to avoid disruptions in relief food distributions in the DRC, particularly for some 51,000 Angolan refugees in the provinces of Katanga, Bas-Congo and Bandundu. In a statement, received by IRIN, WFP said it wanted to continue its assistance to the refugees for another year. “With the renewed fighting in Angola, it is not expected that the refugees will be able to return to their country in the near future,” the statement said. WFP would also organise food-for-work activities to help the populations in the refugee-affected areas to protect the local environment. The statement appealed for a total of US$ 14 million for WFP’s emergency activities in the DRC and the neighbouring Republic of Congo.
