About 30,000 displaced in Lubumbashi

Meanwhile, humanitarian agencies estimated that 145,000 people were displaced from the Katangan districts of Tanganika and Haut-Lomani, where the province's agricultural activities were concentrated, the OCHA report said. In Lubumbashi, the provincial capital, there were an estimated 30,000 war-displaced people, mainly farmers from north Katanga. Some 22,800 people were reported to be staying with local families, and the
rest were grouped in seven displaced sites. The displaced in two sites were able to engage in agricultural activities as part of a UNDP/FAO project, while ICRC and WFP had distributed food aid in four of the sites. But some 2,300 people in the other sites - mainly the families of soldiers - remained largely unassisted and in nutritional distress, it added.
