People displaced from Masisi

    NAIROBI

    The ICRC has reported a new influx of internally-displaced people near Goma from the Masisi and Walikale areas of North Kivu province. In a statement issued last Thursday, it said the displaced had fled night-time attacks on their villages, burning of houses and looting. The statement quoted a local official as saying the displaced were arriving on the outskirts of Goma at a rate of about 50 a day. In Sake, located 25 km east of Goma, some 12,000 newly displaced people had arrived as of 14 April.
    Between 10-15 April, the ICRC in collaboration with the national Red Cross society distributed food supplies to 43,355 vulnerable displaced people in Goma town. Because of poor security conditions, the ICRC can generally only reach people who have sought refugee in towns, the statement added.
