UNHCR will this week close the refugee transit centre in Luozi, Bas Congo Province, after more than 52,000 people who fled the civil war in the neighbouring Republic of Congo returned to their country during the past nine months. The return of refugees accelerated substantially since December last, when a peace agreement was signed between the Republic of Congo's warring factions, and last Saturday a convoy took the remaining
378 refugees from Luozi to a transit camp at Kimaza, UNHCR spokesman Kris Janowski stated on Tuesday. Two years ago, the agency had rushed staff to Luozi, 250km southwest of Kinshasa on the northern bank of the Congo river, when fighting in and around the Republic of Congo capital Brazzaville trapped tens of thousands of people in the Pool region between the city and the DRC, he said. Thousands of refugees made their way across
the river in search of security and assistance, and the transit centre at one point held tens of thousands of people, Janowski added.
