Floods leave 11 dead, thousands homeless

Flooding caused by torrential rains at the weekend have killed at least 11 people and left 8,000 homeless in the coastal province of Benguela, news reports said on Tuesday.

The official radio station RNA said rescue services had by Tuesday recovered 11 bodies from the flood waters at Dombe Grande, about 50km south of the city of Benguela.

The rain burst the River Coporolo’s banks, flooding 6,000 hectares of land and destroyed up to 22,000 mt of corn, local government officials said. Damage caused by the floods was estimated at between US $8 million and US $10 million.
