The UN Security Council has welcomed the appointment of former South African president Nelson Mandela to mediate in the Burundi peace process. In a press statement, the Council urged all sides to show flexibility and to cooperate fully with the new facilitator. It commended Burundian parties and the government which had demonstrated their commitment to continuing negotiations and urged sides that remained outside the process
to cease hostilities.
