South African president Thabo Mbeki said on Wednesday that peace was vital in Southern Africa, warning that conflict threatened the region's stability and prosperity, news reports said.
Mbeki was quoted as saying: "What we want throughout this region is peace. Peace in both Congos, peace in Angola, so that people can address the issue of development." Mbeki was speaking at a ceremony with Namibian President Sam Nujoma to open part of power line between the two countries. He said that it was in everyone's interests to ensure conflict did not jeopardise the region's future.
"We are very conscious of the interdependence of our region. We must seek development, none of the countries in the region can prosper and succeed if it is an island among a sea of others that are crumbling."
