Eritreans deported

About 25 Eritrean refugees were sent back to Ethiopia at the weekend after Malawian immigration officials claimed their entry visas into the country were fake, an immigration official confirmed. The refugees, who claimed they were Eritreans, entered Malawi last week and were immediately held in police cells pending their deportation to Ethiopia where they had reportedly acquired their visas. According to the reports, the refugees had claimed they had each paid US $1,000 for the visas at the Malawian embassy in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. However, Malawi's immigration officials told the refugees that the embassy knew nothing of the visas.
