Officials in Mozambique have temporarily stopped pumping drinking water from the Incomati River following reports that a paper plant in the nearby South African town of Nelspruit last week had allowed chemical waste to escape into the river, PANA reported on Monday.
It quoted Mozambican health authorities as saying they were trying to determine the seriousness of the spillage. Authorities in Mozambique said that they were alerted to the spillage by their South African counterparts and that tests by a South African laboratory showed that there was no danger to human health. Mozambique, however, sent specialists to South Africa to verify the situation further.
