في الأسابيع القليلة الماضية، تحول الزخم في الحرب الأهلية في اليمن بشكل جذري. فقد تم إجبار المتمردين الحوثيين القادمين من شمال البلاد والذين سيطروا على العاصمة صنعاء ووسعوا نفوذهم إلى عدن، فجأة على الارتداد على أعقابهم. وقد تراجعوا شمالاً من عدن ويبدو الآن أنهم سيفقدون السيطرة على مدينة تعز التي تقع في وسط البلاد. 

وقد استفادت القوات الموالية للرئيس المنفي عبد ربه منصور هادي، وكذلك المتمردون الجنوبيون المنحازون له بشكل فضفاض، من وصول قوات وإمدادات من التحالف الذي تقوده المملكة العربية السعودية والذي يضم الدول الداعمة لهادي.

ومع انسحاب المقاتلين الحوثيين، جنباً إلى جنب مع الوحدات العسكرية المنشقة الموالية للرئيس اليمني السابق علي عبد الله صالح، تم اتهامهم بترك سلسلة قاتلة من الألغام والعبوات الناسفة والشراك الخداعية.
