Annan urges end to “spiralling violence” along border

    ABIDJAN

    UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Friday that he deplored “the loss of innocent lives as a result of the vicious attacks” perpetrated by armed elements on Guinean towns and villages.

    In a statement issued by his spokesman, Annan also voiced strong concern over the flight of large numbers of Guinean nationals and Sierra Leonean and Liberian refugees from the conflict area. He was concerned that the situation would further impede “the already difficult task” of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and its relief partners to provide essential aid to the refugees.

    Annan encouraged the international community to support efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to deploy a military observer mission to the border areas.
    He called on all parties “to use whatever means necessary to curb this spiralling violence that is likely to have serious security and humanitarian consequences not only inside Guinea, but also for the subregion as a whole”.
