Media watchdog RSF deplores assaults on press

    NAIROBI

    Reporters sans frontieres (RSF) has expressed concern over the assault on M’Baya Tshimanga, RSF correspondent in the DRC and president of the organisation Journalistes en danger (JED). Ten armed soldiers had tried to force Tshimanga to get out of his car after arresting him at a military checkpoint close to his house, RSF reported. This was a case of intimidation, Tshimanga said, stressing that no other cars had been checked at the time. Over the past few days, Polydor Mubanga, editor of ‘Le Phare’, and Lussamaki Okita, director of ‘Forum des As’, a Kinshasa daily, had been victims of similar assaults, RSF reported. These assaults had been perpetrated since mid-November, when the government media repeatedly threatened several newspapers, RSF pointed out. Robert Menard, the secretary-general of RSF, has called for an investigation of these assaults, after the assault on M’Baya Tshimanga.
