WHO on malaria alert

    JOHANNESBURG

    WHO in Namibia has warned travellers and tourists to protect themselves
    against malaria during Christmas and New Year periods. A WHO statement from
    its Namibia office said on Tuesday that during the festive periods, there is extensive travelling within the southern African region. It also predicated that from December 2000 to May 2001 above normal rainfall will occur over most of southern Africa, with a corresponding level of malaria transmission over most of the region during the same period “Over Christmas, people will be going from malaria-free to malaria areas or those with low levels of transmission, particularly large cities,” the WHO statement said, adding that these travellers will be at a high risk of falling ill with malaria. WHO said malaria killed over 200,000 people a year within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
