The chairman of the Somali National Alliance (SNA), Husayn Muhammad Aydid, one of Mogadishu’s faction leaders opposed to the new government, has accused the government of leading the country into renewed conflict. Aydid said the “so-called government” was “plunging the country into chaos”, according to the pro-Aydid Radio Mogadishu on 27 December, monitored by the BBC. He also accused the Djibouti government of trying to “hand power over to the remnants of the former dictatorial regime”, referring to the Djibouti-hosted elections in August. Aydid called for a national reconciliation conference to be held in “a friendly country”. He went on to call on supporters to get ready for a national conference to be held in Yemen, added the report.

Yemeni President Ali Abdallah Salih has, since August, unsuccessfully attempted to mediate between the interim government and faction leaders opposed it. Meanwhile, Ethiopia had this week invited faction leaders opposed to the new government, local Somali media reported.
