UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Assistant Secretary-General Carolyn McAskie his Special Representative for Burundi, with effect from 1 June. McAskie, a Canadian who has been serving as Annan's humanitarian envoy for the crisis in Côte d’Ivoire since January 2003, was also the deputy head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the UN Secretariat. According to a statement issued on Thursday in the UN headquarters in New York, "McAskie has led a distinguished career, having joined the United Nations as Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator and Deputy to the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs in October 1999, after 32 years of service with the Government of Canada". She has also previously assisted in the Burundi peace process in her capacity as a member of the Burundi Peace Process under the late Julius Nyerere, the former Tanzanian president. McAskie replaces Berhanu Dinka of Ethiopia.
