Bangui grants Aristide temporary asylum

    BANGUI

    Former Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide who resigned on Saturday after an uprising by the population arrived in Bangui, the Central African Republic (CAR) capital, on Monday, state-owned Radio Centrafrique reported.

    The radio reported that the plane carrying Aristide landed at Bangui Mpoko Airport at 7:14 am. he was received by the CAR authorities. Government officials have not made any comment about Aristide's presence in the country, but the radio reported that he had been granted temporary asylum.

    The BBC reported on Sunday that Aristide's departure was the second time he had been forced into exile.

    Aristide, 51, was Haiti's first freely elected president in 200 years of independence. His term was due to expire in 2006. Haiti has been embroiled in a rebellion in recent days, with the population opposed to Aristide's leadership.
