New centre needed for malnutrition

    NAIROBI

    Malnutrition rates in Lugh and El Bon, southern Somalia, have increased due to lack of rain and poor crops, humanitarian sources told IRIN. “The situation in El Bon is very bad,” a representative of Action Contre la Faim (ACF) said. A supplementary feeding centre established by ACF a month ago to provide assistance for children under five years of age was now caring for more than 1,000 children, the representative said. El Bon is some 45 km from Lugh, on the road to Wajid, in the northeastern part of Gedo Region.

    Malnutrition rates in Lugh have also risen, and a second therapeutic centre is being established by ACF. When the first therapeutic centre was opened in February 2000, it catered for about 100 people. The number of people coming to the centre started increasing about three months ago, and it was now coping with about 300 people, ACF told IRIN. There is also a supplementary feeding centre in Lugh.
