Eleven feared dead as boat sinks

    NAIROBI

    Eleven people were feared to have drowned on Sunday night in Lake Tanganyika after a boat they were travelling in sank, news organisations reported on Monday. The commercial boat with 23 passengers on board sank five km from the shore during a storm, Reuters said. It was sailing from Baraka in the DRC to Rumonge, some 95 km south of Bujumbura. “They were caught in bad weather,” Reuters quoted a local official as saying. “Twelve passengers managed to swim ashore.” He said the other 11 were believed to have died. “We haven’t yet found the corpses, but we are searching for them,” the source said. Six people drowned on Thursday when a wave capsized a ferry sailing a cross Lake Tanganyika from Tanzania’s port of Kigoma to the town of Kalemie in eastern DRC.
