Diaspora associations urge rejection of transition proposal

    NAIROBI

    Burundi’s diaspora associations on Wednesday called on Burundians to categorically reject the “dictatorial decisions” taken in Pretoria, South Africa, by the country’s peace mediator, Nelson Mandela, on 10 July 2001. Burundi’s Net Press news agency quoted a communiqué from ACG-Switzerland, ACG-Benelux, ASP-Burundi-Belgium, AIGP-Canada and ACG-Canada, as urging Burundians to “form a movement to reject this high national treason”. Mandela last week announced that President Pierre Buyoya would lead the first 18-month phase of the country’s transition period deputised by the candidate of the G-7 Hutu parties, Domitien Ndayizeye.
