Peace accord signatories to meet ahead of summit

    NAIROBI

    The 19 signatories to the Burundi peace accord are due to hold a two-day meeting in Arusha, Tanzania, beginning on Friday, ahead of a regional summit scheduled for Monday, the Internews press service reported. It quoted Mark Bomani, an aide to peace mediator Nelson Mandela, as saying the signatories are expected to confirm last week’s decision to appoint President Pierre Buyoya to lead the first 18 months of the three year transition period.

    Bomani said the rebel groups had not been invited to the regional summit, due to be attended by 13 heads of state from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Libya, South Africa, Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria and Gabon.
