Rwandan rebels infiltrating northwest

    NAIROBI

    The provincial governor of the northwest Cibitoke province, Benoit Ntigurirwa, has warned of Rwandan ex-FAR and Interahamwe militiamen infiltrating the region from neighbouring DRC, the Agence burundaise de presse (ABP) reported. Speaking during a visit to the province’s Mugina commune, Ntigurirwa noted that over 100 rebels crossed into Cibitoke last weekend, heading for the Kibira forest to join their counterparts. Provincial officials added that the Rwandan rebels were seeking to attack Rwandan prefectures bordering Cibitoke province. ABP said the Burundi army had deployed in the communes of Mabayi, Mugina and Bukinya to counter any rebel offensive.
