RUF wants more on war crimes court

    As the demobilisation of ex-fighters picks up pace, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) has asked for more information on the proposed Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the UN special war crimes tribunal for Sierra Leone, UNAMSIL reported on Monday.

    RUF spokesman Gibril Massaquoi “raised the issue” with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Ambassador Oluyemi Adeniji, at a meeting on Saturday in Makeni, about 138 km northeast of Freetown.
    UNAMSIL Force Commander Lt-Gen Daniel Opande and RUF interim leader Issa Sesay were also present. Adeniji told them that UNAMSIL would run workshops to inform RUF of the composition, organization and functioning of the proposed bodies.

    Responding to RUF’s concerns about the reintegration into society of ex-fighters after demobilization, Adeniji said RUF’s continued commitment to the disarmament process was “a necessary condition” for donors to replenish a Trust Fund set up for Sierra Leone’s reconstruction. Donors outlined their position at the two-day World Bank funding conference in Paris that ended on 12 June but many expressed a preference for bilateral talks on the issue with the Sierra Leone government.
