Buyoya discusses security issues

    NAIROBI

    President Pierre Buyoya on Thursday discussed security issues with provincial governors and commanders of military regions, the Agence burundaise de presse (ABP) reported. While noting that security was “generally good”, they acknowledged that rebel forces “have been slowly returning to their former sanctuaries”. In the first military region (western Burundi), rebel infiltrations from the DRC via Lake Tanganyika to the Kibira forest, had been reported in the provinces of Cibitoke and Bubanza.

    In the second and fifth military regions (eastern Burundi), especially in the provinces bordering Tanzania, the authorities reported “increased vigilance” to check rebel infiltrations. Issues concerning reconstruction and agriculture were also discussed, ABP said.
