New meningitis-affected districts

    According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) there have been a total of 6266 cases of meningococcal including 311 deaths, as of 31 May, in ten out of the eleven regions of Ethiopia. The figures show a case-fatality rate of 5 percent, WHO said. In a report posted on Relief Web, WHO said the cases reflected more accurate figures made available since a previous report. Three regions, Amhara, Oromiya and Southern Nations Nationalities Region were still reporting newly affected districts. “The current trend of the epidemic remains uncertain”, WHO said.

    According to WHO, work in controlling the epidemic has been carried out in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health and partners in the country, including the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the Ethiopian Red Cross Society and Medicins sans Frontieres, France, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland.
