Deputy army commander Brigadier Joram Mugume was due to arrive in the DRC on Wednesday to oversee another phase of the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) withdrawal involving some 7,000 troops, the independent Ugandan newspaper ‘The Monitor’ reported. The troops are scheduled to fully withdraw from 10 areas of the DRC, including Lisala, Gemena, Gbadolite, Beni, Bafaswende, Basankusu and Kabayonga, a senior UPDF officer told ‘The Monitor’, and the withdrawal is expected to be completed within one month. According to ‘The Monitor’, the exercise was supposed to have started at the beginning of June, but was delayed by logistical constraints. The UPDF officer noted that soldiers’ salaries had already been paid to allow them to settle all outstanding personal debts to local people before the return to Uganda.
