Rights groups want end to summary killings

    ABIDJAN

    Two Nigerian human rights groups have called on the police and the federal authorities to take urgent steps to end the spate of extrajudicial killings being carried out across the country, ‘The Guardian’ Lagos daily reported on Friday.

    The Civil Liberties Organization expressed particular concern about the activities of the anti-crime vigilante, known as the Bakassi Boys, operating in the southeastern city of Onitsha. The vigilante summarily executed 36 armed robbery suspects on 29 May. On its part, the Legal Defence and Assistance Project has petitioned the Lagos State police in the southwest over the killing of one Isioma Ifejeh, a Lagos State University student, by people suspected to be student union officials.
