According to the Ugandan army, a Lendu warrior has been arrested in connection with the murders of six Red Cross workers last month in the Ituri region of northeastern DRC. “A Lendu warrior, Dongo Chuja, who was among the 14 who murdered the ICRC [International Committee of the Red Cross] officials on 26 April, has been arrested by our forces in the Bunia sector,” the semi-official ‘New Vision’ cited army spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Phineas Katirima as saying. Katirima added that the motive was robbery. “He [Chuja] claimed their objective was not political but survival,” Katirima said. “They looted two phones, clothes and an unspecified amount of money.” The six - a Swiss, a Columbian and four Congolese - were murdered about 30 km north of Bunia, near the Ugandan border, in an area that has seen bloody clashes between the rival Hema and Lendu communities, the ‘New Vision’ recalled.
