RUF suffers casualties

Revolutionary United Front (RUF) fighters said they suffered nine casualties in fighting against pro-government Civil Defence Forces that began on Saturday in the eastern district of Kono, the UN Mission Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) said. There was no clear indication as to what prompted the fighting. UN spokeswoman Margaret Novicki told reporters in Freetown on Tuesday that UN military observers and UNAMSIL peacekeepers went on Monday to Koidu, the main town in Kono, to investigate reports of the fighting. Despite the reported clash, fighting has virtually come to a halt since a ceasefire on 10 November 2000 between the RUF and government forces, according to UNAMSIL.
