OAU wants UN General Assembly to focus on malaria

    ABIDJAN
    The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) has asked the UN General Assembly to initiate steps to combat malaria in Africa, UN News reported on Tuesday. OAU Representative Kodjo Menan also pleaded for financial aid to eradicate the disease, which costs African countries US $12 billion per year. The OAU wants the General Assembly to declare 2001-2010 the ‘Decade to Roll Back Malaria in Africa’. According to the World Health Organisation, malaria kills 1,000,000 people per year, 90 percent of them in Africa.
