Rabies takes on epidemic dimension in Upper-West

    ABIDJAN

    Health authorities in Ghana’s Upper-West Region have said that rabies was fast becoming endemic in the area and that the Veterinary Service needed to destroy all infected animals immediately, Joyonline FM, a local broadcaster, reported on Thursday.

    It quoted the acting regional director of health, Dr. Francis Bankah, as also calling for a mass vaccination of dogs and other pets. He said it cost 75,000 cedis (US $10) to vaccinate a person with rabies and the local equivalent of 71 US cents for a dog. Bankah was presenting an overview of the public health situation in the region.
