Meanwhile, RCD-Goma authorities on Tuesday condemned the shelling of Pweto, southeastern DRC, by government forces on Monday. “With no discrimination between military and civilian targets, the shelling left two people dead and a few others wounded,” rebel-controlled radio from Goma said. “RCD once again denounces and condemns such suicidal practices by Mr Laurent-Desire Kabila,” it added.
Earlier, in northwestern DRC , the leader of the Ugandan-backed Mouvement de liberation du Congo (MLC), Jean-Pierre Bemba, was quoted by Associated Press (AP) as saying on Sunday that his forces had shot down a Zimbabwean MiG fighter after it had bombed Basankusu, about 900 km northeast of the DRC capital, Kinshasa, the previous day. He said the pilot had been killed when his aircraft was hit by an anti-aircraft missile and crashed in a nearby forest. However, Bemba’s claim was dismissed by Zimbabwean presidential spokesman George Charamba on the grounds that Zimbabwe “does not operate MiG planes”, according to the agency.
